Insomniac hosts an another incredible experience in Puerto Rico

Dancers + Datsik = Awesome

It's been some 30 hours since Electronic Daisy Carnival, and I have to admit: "I'm still reeling from such an intense experience."  I still can't hear out of my right ear, I still can't seem to drink enough water, my arms and legs ache, and I've still got to go through some 2,700 photographs I took during EDC.

One of the things that Insomniac understands is generating engagement (involvement) by appealing to multi-sensory experiences.  As they put it, they are not concert producers. they are experience creators.  From the props, to the costumes; from the rides to the art; from the dancers to the light shows, an Electric Daisy Carnival is like no other event you will ever attend. 

No matter how crazy fans may get, their events seem to be able to harness an audience's emotions and reflect it back to them in a way that creates an electrifying experience.  At least for this humble photographer, I'd have to say that this year's Electric Daisy Carnival was one of the best moments of my life.

Popular DubStep Producer Set to Play Electric Daisy Carnival

If you haven't heard of SoundCloud, then you're in for a treat. According to their website, SoundCloud is the world’s leading social sound platform where anyone can create sounds and share them everywhere.

Recording and uploading sounds to SoundCloud lets people easily share them privately with their friends or publicly to blogs, sites and social networks.

An example of this slick sharing is the ability to embed a track on a website.  Here is one of Datsik's latest, a remix of Linkin Park's "Until it Breaks." Very cool...

Map of Electric Daisy Carnival 2012

Flipped through the paper this morning and to my delight, there was an advance copy of the map and layout for 2012 Electric Daisy Carnival in Puerto Rico.  A quick check of the website, and I confirmed this map hasn't been posted there, so this is a web exclusive. Here's how they're organizing things:

As mentioned yesterday, there will be four stages.  Both circuitGROUNDS and bassPOD will be indoors, while the kineticFIELD and neonGARDEN will be outside with the carnival rides.  Both of the indoor stages appear to hold the most people, so I guess planners expect the biggest crowds there, mosh pit anyone?  The smallest space is reserved for neonGARDEN.

From the map, there appear to be six carnival rides planned for EDC 2012, with a trio of local art installations.  If you get the munchies while you're at EDC, and you will, then head to the neonGARDEN.  Just to the right of the stage appears to be the only location to grab something to eat. 

Finding a drink won't be any problem, but remember ALL drinks, food, and merchandise must be paid for in cash.  So, save yourself some aggravation and stop at a sacachavo before entering.  There will be some portable ATMs inside, but I wouldn't depend on them.  We'll see you tomorrow, enjoy!

Hurricane Free Electric Daisy Carnival 2012

Just checked the National hurricane Center and to my surprise, there is another tropical storm  in the Atlantic.  But, we are in luck because it's following Michael and Leslie up into the middle of the Atlantic.  Wheesh!

So that means, that we are still all systems go for Operation BassDrop, otherwise known as the Electric Daisy Carnival.  Don't miss the crazy vibe, this Saturday at the Panamerican Pier Complex in Miramar.  Looking at the weather, the north bound Nadine might keep the weather stable.  The predictions are for 20% chance of rain for EDC on Saturday/Sunday.  Come to think of it though, I don't the chance of rain in Puerto Rico is ever 0%, it's the tropics for crying out loud!

Electric Daisy Carnival Live!

Oh yeah, I got my press pass approval from Insomniac, so that means I'll be able to bring in the big guns to EDC!  Yep, I'll be bringing my DSLR along for my trip to the carnival.  This should prove to be very interesting. 

One of the things some people think about before going to EDC is how am I going to catch anyone's attention amidst a full-on rave?  With everyone walking around with adrenaline pumping, it can sometimes be tricky to get any attention (engagement).  But when you've got a nice camera, you've got an instant draw (an Engage-acon 3000)!  Everyone wants their picture taken when they're having a good time.

Hurricane Forecast EDC 2012 in Puerto Rico

With T minus 7 days and counting the long range hurricane forecast for Puerto Rico is looking good for EDC 2012.  With Leslie and Michael both heading north there are no hurricanes or tropical anythings heading towards Puerto Rico!

So it looks like all systems are a go for Electric Daisy Carnival launch next Saturday at 4:00pm.  Cue up the bass drops in 5, 4, 3, ...

My teenage daughters do it. My 8 yr old does and I have to confess. I do it too!

Whenever I get hooked by a new artist, I've got to know more about them. I (we) start looking for other videos, maybe interviews, maybe a backstage perspective. I love learning about what artists think about themselves and their influences.

So that's what I've been doing for DatsiK. In this nugget I found in the archives of Spinner Magazine. It's an interview with DatsiK he shares his experience participating with music festivals, his roots, and guily pleasures:

After first hearing the punishing bass of the dubstep sound on ginormous outdoor festival speakers, DJ/producer Datsik was hooked like a junkie with his first hit. Ever since, Datsik has still been in search of that perfect high, playing with some of the top performers on the circuit, driven to create more and more boundary-pushing bass music.

Electric Daisy Carnival User Experience

We live in an infinite marketplace.  probably anything you can imagine, and much more, is already for sale over the Internet.  One of the new successful business models for content is live performances.  Creating scarcity,  there's nothing like going in person and feeling the energy vibe.  That's why these unique experiences are such good business.

Electric Daisy Carnival, by using multiple tiers or entertainment, the event appeals to it's audience in multiple senses and tastes.  So what is EDS like?  Speaking from a transmedia or software development perspective, the user experience for someone who attends Electric Daisy is something like this (photographs graciously provided by Caesar Sebastian via a Creative Commons license, great job mate!) :

60,000 Ft Indoor Space @ Panamerican Pier - EDC 2012

What it feels like at EDC!!!

Brushed of a few map reading tricks and I was able to estimate that the left and right side docks are about 60,000 square feet each. They each are about 300 feet by 100 feet, each 30,000 square feet each. I wonder how many people fit into a building with about 25,000 feet?

EDC Update: Indoor Space @ Panamerican Pier

Researching the acts for EDC, I ran across this video from an indoor facility.  Looking back on the satellite image, their are two large buildings on each side of complex.  That's 2/3 of the stages, and a lot more room for the last stage plus carnival.

I bet this move is because September 15th is the peak of hurricane activity on the island.  Last years EDC caught a break and we missed almost completely hurricane Maria in 2011.  The field (except for Tito Puente Ampitheater) was a mud trap.

I bet Insomniac would prefer to go with a concrete and indoor based facility, like the Panamerican Pier, than take another chance on the weather. An actual hurricane hit would most likely be cancelled, but they would know whether to go for it or cancel it with days of notice.  Setting up and breaking down in good weather and firm footing is critical to any show's profitability.

DatSik Coming to Puerto Rico!

Dubstep's "darkest and most robotic," "funkiest and most gangster," and "dirtiest" DJ is coming to EDC 2012!

For me as soon as I saw the line-up announced for Electric Daisy Carnival 2012, the name that jumped right out at me was DatSik.  For those of you who haven't had the pleasure:

Puerto Rico EDC 2012 in Panamerican Pier?

Just how many people can fit into the facility? Will it be enough?

Just take a quick look at this link for the ariel photography of the Panamerican Pier on the World Port Source: Panamerican Pier. Based on last year's reported crowd for EDC and Skrillex in Pablo Sixto Escobar in January, I'd guess at least 15,000 ravers will want to go to the carnival.

I don't know how much of the facility has been cleared, but it needs to host 3 stages, the rides, PLUS 15,000 raging ravers.  Seems like too small of a location.  Change of venues have been a common occurrence with festival like atmospheres. Both EDC 2011 and Skrillex changed venues, it all depends on us.  Ticket sales will most likely drive the venue. So we'll see.
